Unclogging a Bathroom Sink

It is common for bathroom sinks to become clogged occasionally, normally due to the buildup of soap scum and hair that arises from constant use. If your sink is draining slowly, but your toilet and tub are draining well, you may be able to fix the blockage yourself, without calling in a plumbing professional. You have the choice of several different methods to try to unclog your sink.

Instructions:  Difficulty: Moderately Easy

1. Remove the pop-up plug from your sink by twisting it by the plug or taking out the pivot rod on the back of the outlet pipe. Examine the plug for anything that could be clogging the sink, such as hair. Clean blockages with needle-nose pliers. Put the pivot arm back in but keep the plug out. Pour hot water down the drain. Replace the plug.

2. Fill 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Pour the baking soda down the drain, immediately followed by the white vinegar, to create an acidic reaction to dissolve blockages. Pour 1 cup of lemon juice down the drain to neutralize odors. 3.Block the sink's overflow hole with a wet rag. Fill the sink halfway with water. Force a plunger over the top of the drain for a couple of minutes. Refill the sink with water if required. Carry on plunging until the water flows out at a normal speed.

4. Pour a liquid drain cleaner into your drain. Read the manufacturer's directions for use and follow all safety precautions; these products are dangerous. Wear protective gloves and plastic googles. Boil water and pour it down the drain after using the liquid drain cleaner, to flush your pipes thoroughly.
